Introducing Saflex K Series High Security Interlayer for Laminated Glass

Increasing demand for passenger safety in the event of automotive collisions has prompted automakers to look for new solutions to enhance safety in their overall vehicle designs.

In response, Saflex has created the Saflex® K series high security interlayer: an advanced, composite, polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer, which is stronger and more resistant to tearing and penetration than standard interlayers used in windshields today.

Saflex K Series High Security InterlayerThis high security interlayer from Saflex is also the critical component of Enhanced Technology Glass (ETG) created in collaboration with PPG Industries, Inc. ETG has been designed to help mitigate the risk of ejection for passengers seated next to rear fourth and fifth row windows in passenger vans in the event of rollover and crashes.

What makes Saflex K series unique?

Saflex K series high security interlayer delivers advanced performance levels in tear and penetration resistance as part of a laminated glazing unit. This technology, which was originally developed as glazing solution to resist hurricanes in the Southeastern region of the United States, infuses glass with enough strength to resist the impact of a two-by-four piece of lumber traveling at 50 feet per second.

How secure is your vehicle?

If your vehicle is fitted with regular tempered side windows, (as most vehicles are) then the answer is "not very secure at all". It takes a thief less than two seconds to break the glass and enter your car.

Is it any wonder that people want tougher windows in their cars? Just look at the facts. Each year, there are over 330,000 cars stolen and 1.8 million thefts from cars in the UK alone*. In the U.S., over 1.2 million cars are stolen and 1.8 million more vehicle break-ins** occur. Police documentation shows that 50% of all these thefts and break-ins occur through the side windows.

However, it takes a thief 20 to 30 seconds of continuous pounding to break laminated glass made with Saflex protective interlayer. By the time it takes them to enter the car, most opportunistic thieves just give up.

In order to make it easier for vehicle owners to identify the type of glass fitted in their vehicle, many manufacturers are beginning to mark the glass with easy to identify symbols. These symbols on side windows say the vehicle is protected with laminated glass.

In addition to intrusion resistance, laminated glass made with Saflex interlayer also provides the following benefits:
